We've clearcut (ouch!) a small amount of our 2.5 acre farm to get old Sol to shine his light down on patch of earth and allow us to grow us some foodstuffs.  We are currently growing a rotating crop of bracs (cabbages, broccoli, kale, etc,) onions and garlic, tomatoes, peas, squashes, lettuces, root veggies, salad greens, peppers, cucumbers, squashes, strawberries, herbs, okra, corn, etc. etc. with varying degrees of success, amply fertilized by our livestock manures but subject to the whims of Sol.
